24 Hot Potatoes in the Church Today
It seems the timing
for this book on hot issues affecting both men and women in the church today is
most appropriate—even past due. The issues are called “hot potatoes” because
Christians and non-Christians alike commonly bring them up as questions and controversies that the church is too
often not able or willing to cover from the pulpit.
These issues are not pointed to any particular church but presented to all the body of Christ everywhere—in churches, Bible schools, Christian colleges and universities, members of Christian congregations, and anyone outside of the church interested in these subject matters. Often the church is afraid or careful not to offend anyone today. The pressures of the world are powerful and “in your face” like never before. In speaking about this with dedicated Christian friends and colleagues, their comments are always, “But isn’t this what the church is supposed to do—teach the truth on the hard issues?”
The church is not
necessarily altogether to blame. The church used to preach hard issues earlier
in history, and people responded positively. But today people have changed, and
most don’t want to hear the hard truth anymore. Someone recently said that
truth is now the victim. In 2 Timothy 4:3 it says, “For the time will come when
they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap
to themselves teachers, having itching ears;”. But the issues still need to be
addressed. We are reminded also of these two passages from the Word of God:
Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke,
exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. (2 Timothy 4:2)
But, beloved, remember the words which were spoken before of the
apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; How that they told you there should be
mockers in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts. These
are they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit. But you,
beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy
Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord
Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion, making a
difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating
even the garment spotted by the flesh. (Jude 17 to 23).
That is the reason
for the writing of this book: in obedience to the Word of God. It’s been in the
works for a long time, ever since was noticed the altogether lack of messages
preached on these subjects or the absence of thorough and meaningful scriptural
exegesis when attempts are made.
What the book
attempts to do is to bring forth the tough issues to open up conversations in
the church about them. Church members want to hear answers from the Word of God
and not just from man’s opinions. For the first time, that the author is aware
of, a thorough study has been made right here in these pages based on the Word
of God on the timely hot issues of women and men in the church. Other issues also covered are the lack of male
leadership, pornography, sex, life and abortion, homosexuality, music in the
church, heaven and hell, divorce and remarriage, male/female brains, theology, eschatology,
the relevance of both Old and New Testaments today, the lack of talent
recognition in the church, whether Christians should celebrate Jewish Feasts, the
Sabbath on Saturday, Christmas and Easter, and more.
On the issues of
women in church and ministry and in the home, there is much to be clarified
from both men’s and women’s viewpoints. The gender gap must be reduced to the
size that was in the beginning as God intended, for the well-being of both men
and women and society as a whole. Not only should women read about the issues
facing women in the church, but men should read them also because they involve
them, too. One of the reasons why we have such erroneous understanding of these
topics is because men have not been interested in many of these matters, as I
explain in the chapters of this book.
Ii is sincerely
hoped this book will open up healthy dialogues with men and women in our
churches, ministries, and Christian colleges everywhere about what the Word of
God is saying on these hot potatoes. It is realized that some of these issues
are hard to face, and the best efforts have been endeavored to present them as
inoffensively as possible. Every effort has been made also, prayerfully and
diligently, to be as accurate as possible in the research and studies of the
topics to put it all together in this work. If you notice anything that should
be corrected or adjusted, please let the author know by writing to care of the publisher.
Although each
chapter stands by itself and can be read in any order, it is recommended that
the complete work be read sequentially. Many truths discussed in one chapter
are applicable to other chapters in re-affirming and completing aspects of questions that each issue may raise during reading. The
whole works together to deliver succinctly what God has to say to the Body of
Christ at this time.
Bottom line of the
book is that we need to make some changes where necessary. We need to examine
our lives and be ready and prepared to live right before God in these chaotic
times. Many are praying for revival. Many are expecting an awakening. But, without
repentance revival and awakening cannot happen.
Now is the time,
more than ever, to pray the full scripture, “If my people who are called by my
name shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their
wicked ways, then will I hear from
heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles
7:14)
Ultimately, the goal of the author in discussing the issues in this
book is not necessarily to convince the reader of viewpoints on these issues,
but rather, it is to give as much knowledge and information as possible so that
readers can decide for themselves or at least begin to ask the right questions in their own search for the
truth in the Word of God.
